This board keeps 15 unique character sequences selected for rating-friendly stars, dingbat stars, and sparkles. It preserves ⭐️ as U+2B50 U+FE0F, rather than dropping its emoji variation selector, and leaves astronomical and other star families outside this page.

★ (U+2605 BLACK STAR) and ☆ (U+2606 WHITE STAR) are the pair people mean by “star symbol.” They are dingbats: text-colored, usually the same size as nearby type, and they do not become a yellow sticker unless an app forces an emoji presentation. ✦ and ✧ are four-pointed stars, not the five-pointed pair. ✪ is a circled white star—a dingbat with a ring—not a badge emoji. ✫ ✬ ✭ ✮ ✯ ✰ are ornament stars from the same dingbat neighborhood (open centre, outlined, pinwheel, shadowed). If you need a simple filled or outline star, start with ★ or ☆ and ignore the ornaments until you have checked the destination font.

Emoji stars are a different job. ⭐ (stored here with an emoji variation selector as ⭐️, U+2B50) is typically a yellow five-pointed star. ✨ SPARKLES is a burst, not an outline of ★. 🌟 is a glowing star; 💫 is dizzy, a swirl that reads as “stars circling a head,” not a rating glyph. These follow the phone’s emoji font, so they can look unlike each other on iOS, Android, and Windows, and they will not match body text the way ★ does. A “star rating” pasted as ★★★★☆ is still five characters, not a widget: nothing here creates an interactive control.

Lookalikes are the usual mis-click. A four-pointed ✦ next to a five-pointed ★ can look similar at 12px. Pinwheel ✯ can pass as a flower-like ornament; it is still a star dingbat, not a florette. Sparkles ✨ get used as a cute prefix the same way people use a flower dingbat—but florettes and flower emoji live on Flower Symbols, not here. Asterisks * are punctuation, not stars. Hollow ☆ is not a checkbox. If a card name says “shadowed white star,” believe the name instead of the tiny preview.

What this page is not: it is not a flower picker, not a bullet-point pack, not a rating component, and not every astronomical or religious star in Unicode. You do not get a six-pointed star set, a compass rose, or a movie-rating API. Click copies a single Unicode character. If the destination shows a box, the current font lacks that dingbat—fall back to ★, ☆, or ✨, which current phones usually draw. On Windows, Win + . finds some star emoji; on macOS, Character Viewer can search “black star.” Those methods are easy to mix up with lookalikes, which is why the cards keep the Unicode name next to the glyph.
