How to use this Grade-1 braille translator

What Grade 1 braille does—and does not do

Grade 1 braille spells words letter by letter instead of replacing common words or letter groups with contractions. That makes the mapping easier to inspect and useful for learning individual cells. It does not make the output publication-ready: formal braille also uses indicators, spacing, punctuation rules, and layout conventions that depend on context.

Two common misconceptions are that Unicode braille automatically becomes tactile and that every raised-dot pattern is readable in every setting. On a screen these characters are visual symbols unless assistive technology or specialized hardware interprets them. A font may also render the dots at an unsuitable size. For accessible material, keep an ordinary-text equivalent and have the final transcription reviewed in the intended medium.

Frequently asked questions

Is this Grade-1 or Grade-2 braille?

This tool uses Grade-1 (uncontracted) letter cells only. Contracted Grade-2 braille is out of scope for this version.

Does case matter?

No. Uppercase and lowercase English letters map to the same Grade-1 cells. Capital indicators are not emitted or required on decode.

How are numbers encoded?

Digits use a number-sign cell followed by the a–j letter cells (1=a … 9=i, 0=j). Decode returns to letter mode after spaces or newlines.

Does conversion run locally?

Yes. Mapping runs in your browser; your text is not sent to a server for conversion.

Does Unicode braille create raised dots?

No. Unicode stores the dot pattern as a character, but an ordinary screen or printout is not tactile braille. Embossing and refreshable braille hardware require an appropriate production workflow.

Can I publish the generated cells as accessible braille?

Not without review. The converter omits contractions and several indicators used in complete transcription. Keep a plain-text label and ask a qualified transcriber to check consequential or public material.
